Jimmy Hall, one of the most versatile singers in the music industry, will headline the 4th Annual Rock the Block fundraiser on March 23rd at the IP Casino Resort and Spa. Hall is the dynamic front man of the pioneering southern rock group Wet Willie and is also known as a blues powerhouse. Local favorites, Blackwater Brass, will bring their popular brand of funk music to entertain the crowd as well. Local celebrity spokesperson Rebecca Powers will emcee the evening.
Rock the Block, now in its fourth year, is the major fundraiser for the Rock U 2 Foundation, which provides scholarships for musical instruments, lessons and interactive music programs for underserved and disabled children in south Mississippi who otherwise might not have music as a part of their lives. It is a 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit. Tim Alamsha, president of The Rock U 2 Foundation said, “We are so blessed to have seen the impact music can have on a child’s life. This fundraiser is the cornerstone of our scholarship program, and helps cover tuition and instrument costs for kids who otherwise could not explore music. We are so thankful to Jimmy Hall and Blackwater Brass for coming to entertain our guests and support the Foundation.”
Although Jimmy Hall was born in Birmingham, AL, he was raised on the Gulf Coast in Mobile in a musical family heavily influenced by a mother’s love of gospel music and ragtime. Hall’s varied roles include lead vocalist for rock guitar icon Jeff Beck and band (2015, 2016 and 2017 U.S., European and East Asia tours) and long term band member with Hank Williams Jr. Hall is the vocalist for Jeff Beck’s 2016 Live album, Loud Hailer.
ROCK U 2 bands, vocal groups and soloists will also be performing throughout the evening. Guests will enjoy wonderful cuisine, wine, beer, soft drinks and craft beverages thanks to the generous donation from IP Casino Resort and Spa, in addition to a night of world-class talent. There will be a silent auction with fabulous gifts, door prize drawings and an evening of fun and camaraderie.
